What does the term “knowledge management (KM)” mean to you? Most people think of it as a vague descriptor for sharing or storing information, but few know the breadth of KM and how it can be used effectively to strengthen organizations and international public health projects. K4Health is pleased to announce the launch of the KM 101 eLearning course and the re-launch of the Online Communities of Practice (CoP) eLearning course.

The KM 101 course is designed to demystify the concept of KM. This course provides learners with a basic understanding of KM and why it is important to the field of international public health. This course takes about 45 minutes to complete. By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Compare and contrast the two major classifications of knowledge, tacit and explicit

Describe commonalities amongst KM definitions in light of the fact that there is no universally accepted definition

Identify the multidisciplinary nature of KM

Defend the importance of KM in today’s ever-changing world, especially within the field of international health

The re-launch of the Online CoP course couldn’t be more timely since CoPs are one of the most common and popular tools for KM. CoPs connect professionals with common interests worldwide to allow exchange of experiences, successes, and failures. Learn how to establish and nurture a CoP by taking this short course.

I am pleased to announce that Matt Kershnar has joined the NPOKI team, in the role of COHORT Project Manager.

Matt started his technology career at a healthcare dot com in San Francisco. After moving to New York City, he worked for NPower, a nonprofit whose mission is to help other nonprofits align their technology needs to their mission. As a project manager at NPower, he worked with dozens of nonprofits on projects ranging from project management for web and application development, to network infrastructure renewals. His clients included Community Access, Uncommon Schools, the Knowledge is Power Program (KIPP), Yorkville Common Pantry and Big Brothers Big Sisters. In 2006 he started Komodo Systems, which focuses on providing quality IT services to nonprofits in the New York City area. Matt has traveled to various countries in Europe, North Africa, Central America and Asia. In his free time you will find him at the Prospect Park Tennis Center, at a city mini-golf course, or stuffing his face at the great restaurants in New York City.

Matt Kershnar will project manage all aspects of COHORT implementation and integration for NPOKI members. His responsibilities will include project communications, vendor management, member liaison and user training & documentation. You can reach Matt at mkershnar@npoki.org. The addition of Matt’s extensive project management and client relations expertise will strengthen NPOKI and enable rigorous project management practices to be extended to the COHORT suite, as NPOKI members integrate this powerful portfolio management software into their organizations. Please join me in welcoming Matt to the NPOKI team.

Bill Lester

NPOKI Executive Director
