InsideNGO Honors William (Bill) Lester of NPOKI

with the 2017 Excellence in Information Technology Award

WASHINGTON – InsideNGO honored NPOKI Executive Director William (Bill) Lester with its 2017 Excellence in Information Technology Award at its annual conference, Framing the Future of NGO Excellence, in Washington, DC, last evening.

The InsideNGO Operational Excellence Awards, which include the Excellence in Information Technology Award, were established in 2010 to recognize professionals within the development sector who are innovating, collaborating, and ensuring operational excellence within their organizations. Winners were chosen from among 35 nominations put forth by InsideNGO member organizations across the US and internationally earlier this year. Nominators were asked to submit detailed recommendations explaining how their nominees embodied operational excellence.

In their nomination, NPOKI Senior Consultant Mary Kathryn (MK) Cope and Chief Information Officer Surya Ganguly noted that Bill has been working to solve information challenges faced by NGOs worldwide for more than three decades.

“The need to standardize the reporting of information, particularly in the field of global health, led to the development of a working group dedicated to sharing information in a way as to avoid replication/ duplication,” they wrote. From these early discussions came the NonProfit Organizations Knowledge Initiative (NPOKI), which focuses on a variety of projects with an emphasis on performance management, collaboration and digital communities of practice…  Bill’s body of work has had astonishing impactHis early work focused on an individual organization but through NPOKI he has shared his knowledge, skill, humanity, and good humor with multiple organizations and people throughout the world.

“We are pleased to recognize Bill Lester with the Excellence in Information Technology Award,” said InsideNGO President and CEO Tom Dente. “Bill has been a highly-engaged member and great partner to InsideNGO over the years, and we have seen his commitment to operational excellence come to life in many ways, from the ‘Connect the Information Dots’ webinars he’s hosted for our community to his training at workshops and his presentations at our annual conference. We greatly value his contributions and it is an honor to present him with this award.

More than 1,100 development practitioners from nearly 200 member organizations attended InsideNGO’s annual conference at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center this year, making it one of the largest gatherings of professionals in the international development and humanitarian community in the U.S.
